Japanese consortium to develop solar powered CPU

Technology.am (Sept. 12, 2009) — The solar powered CPU that will consume 70% less energy is being developed by a consortium of seven Japanese companies.
The main idea behind this move is to lessen the dependence on foreign technologies. This is going to be a challenge for AMD and Intel.
Seven Japanese companies are Toshiba, Fujitsu, Canon, Panasonic, Hitachi, NEC and Renesas.

Tata DoCoMo launches Pay Per-Character “Diet-SMS”

Technology.am (Sept. 10, 2009) — Instead of charging for a text message of 160 characters, Indian Tata DoCoMo has just launched a short messaging service, called Diet-SMS, which will allow users to pay on a per-character basis. The company will not charge for space between words.
“The cost of any Diet-SMS will be only one paise per character used (100 paise= 1 rupee).
Tata Docomo has launched this service in eight telecom circles India.

Mosquito screens found to be Cheap & Effective in malaria prevention

Technology.am (Sept. 04, 2009) — Trials of a screen-based malaria prevention programme in 500 homes in The Gambia, Africa, have led to a 50 per cent reduction in malaria transmission and anaemia in children.
Scientists at Durham University tested two types of screens to protect children against malaria. In the first, screens were attached to windows and doors, and holes in the eaves were closed. IBM unveils Industry’s First Public Desktop Cloud Service

Technology.am (Sept. 01, 2009) — IBM announced the industry’s first public desktop cloud service that is designed to help bring cost savings, flexibility, scalability and security to clients.
It enables end-users with network-attached PCs to access applications and data through a centrally managed computing environment.
The new IBM Smart Business Desktop on the IBM Cloud subscription service helps clients virtualize desktop computing resources, and provide a logical, rather than a physical, method of access to data, computing power, storage capacity and other resources.

Victoria University Scientist gets award for turning Wool into Gold

Technology.am (Sept. 01, 2009) — Scientist at Victoria University in New Zealand has won a prestigious award for turning Merino wool into gold.
Professor Jim Johnston developed a world-first process in which nano-particles of pure gold and silver are embedded in merino wool to create a luxury fibre that can be used in high-end fashion garments, textiles and carpets.

iLike’s debuts Music Download Store

Technology.am (Aug. 15, 2009) — The popular music recommendation service iLike opened a music download store on Friday, and has begun selling MP3s from all the major music labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI.
But at present, the social-networking service iLike offers song downloads from at least three of the major labels.
The prices are comparable with those found at iTunes and Amazon. Seattle-based iLike offers users MP3 downloads for $0.89 to $1.29 per song.
