STMicro Reports Quarterly Loss, 4500 Jobs Cut

The current market slum is putting the effect of the company’s Q3 results. The Europe’s largest chipmaker, STMicroelectronics, has reported a $366 million net loss for the fourth quarter of 2008. For this loss recovery Company will go to cut 4,500 jobs in a cost cutting drive.

Digg Has a New Head of Sales Coming From Yahoo!

After having problems in talks with Google last year and announcing some job cut last week, Digg is rolling up its sleeves and getting to work. The company has hired Tom Shin as its new head of sales who has come from Yahoo, where he was one of the top sales people and head of the Northwest sales region. His job is to build a sales team at Digg go after advertising dollars more directly, something CEO Jay Adelson recently underscored as a big goal of the company in 2009. …

United Kingdom launches “Google for Films” Search Engine

LONDON – The UK Film Council is launching a search engine that will help British movie goers track down their favorite films, from the mainstream to the obscure.
The website (www.FindAnyFilm.com) is free to use and contains records of more than 30,000 films, or roughly seven years’ worth of viewing, and they come in 20 genres and over 60 languages.

VC Dollars Dropped 33% In The Fourth Quarter, Down 8% For All 2008

Venture capital firms tightened their purse strings in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the latest MoneyTree Report released by the National Venture Capital Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The total dollar amount invested in venture financings was $5.4 billion, down 33 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007 (when it was $8.09 billion) and down 26 percent from the third quarter of 2008 (when it was $7.3 billion). For the entire year, the total venture capital invested into startups was $28.3 billion, down 8 percent.

Nokia’s N5800 touch screen phone launches – Is it an iPhone beater?
