Enmac launches world’s first Islamic e-Book

Technology.am (July 26, 2009) — Enmac, manufacturer and distributors of digital Islamic products, has launched the world’s first Islamic e-Book with a seven-inch touch-screen LCD display in the United Arab Emirates.

e-book Named E-Alim EL1000, and its literal meaning is ‘the electronic scholar’. This is not just a book you can put in the library; they have put the library in a book. Moreover, apart from the text and picture books, you can view interactive multimedia including audio, video and applications.

The text of the Quran is displayed in exactly the same style as the printed version, making sure that each line and page ends exactly on the same character as in the paper-printed Quran.

The e-Alim runs on a Samsung 400MHZ processor and uses Enmac’s own Islamic operating system based on an underlying Windows CE 5.0.

EL1000 is the first model of the e-Alim series and the company plans to launch two more models in the region by year-end.

The product is priced at $250 or Dh917.5 and it available in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and will be made available in the rest of the Gulf region shortly.

They have already sold 200 units in the last couple of weeks in the UAE and expect to sell around 500 units during Ramadan. The Hong Kong company expects to sell around 10,000 units in the Gulf this year, 2,500 of them in the UAE.

The upcoming models of the e-Alim series include online internet connectivity via the WiFi and 3G allowing users to add and view applications and content including Islamic magazines, newspapers, latest e-Books and services like online fatawas etc.
