Google Building Bing-Killer Search Engine

August 12, 2009 - 5:51 am | 7,379 views

Technology.am (Aug. 12, 2009) — Google has unveiled a new search engine, currently nicknamed “Caffeine,” that could really shake up search results. You may think Google is the fastest search engine around, but that doesn’t mean the company doesn’t want to improve.

Google-Building-CTaking aim at its rivals, Google revealed that the new version of its popular search engine that strives to deliver faster and more comprehensive results.

“For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s Web search,” Google engineers Sitaram Iyer and Matt Cutts said in an official blog post.

This new architecture appears to include crawling, indexing, and ranking changes. For the first time, Google isn’t simply incorporating these changes into their existing infrastructure or replacing it. Instead, they’re providing a developer preview and are asking webmasters and power searchers to try it out and give them feedback.

Google stressed that, for now, it is only seeking feedback regarding how Caffeine performs compared to its current search engine and is not fishing for comparisons to offerings from rival Internet firms.

People on Tuesday could use the new technology online at www2.sandbox.google.com.

The new infrastructure sits ‘under the hood’ of Google’s search engine. Although the screen looks the same, testers said the new version provides slightly different results.

It is expected that the new infrastructure may include ways of crawling the web more comprehensively, determining reputation and authority and returning more relevant results more quickly.

The biggest visible changes in Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, are user-interface related; Google’s new search is only infrastructure related and includes no UI changes. On first glance, the underlying infrastructure changes do seem to have impacted user interface as it relates to universal search.

A search for on the new infrastructure, for instance, returns video and news results midway down the page.

Google sucks. Bing is like a fresh breeze of air. Search anything on Google, the results will come from authority sites & forums, even if it’s 7 years old & not relevant today. Search latest hardware prices & the mighty Google will give you a sneak peek into history. haha.

I tried Bing just once and cannot say any good or bad about it.I use Google for searches and when they present more exact search results with Caffeine i definitely will stay using Google.

I honestly didn’t know Bing needed killing, but cool anyway.

Haha, yeah, since when is Bing a big deal? This reminds me of when everybody thought that Wolfram Alfa would be the Google killer lol.. But anyway, props to Google for realizing that changing how it works is how it should be improved. Aesthetics are relatively unimportant, at least in the case of a search engine. Function and ease of use are what really matter.
