Microsoft Loses court case, but Word expected to continue

Technology.am (Dec. 24, 2009) — First, the good news: No, users won’t have to turn in your copies of Office 2007; even now that Microsoft has lost its plea of the proceedings brought by the Canadian company, i4i. The lawsuit, a copyright fight over a feature few business users ever see, will cost Microsoft $290 million to resolve.

Microsoft finally settles 10-year battle with Europe on browsers

Technology.am (Dec 16, 2009) — Microsoft has reached accord with European Union anti-trust regulators to permit European users a selection of web browsers. The agreement ends 10 years of disagreement between the two sides.
Over that time, the EU forced fines totaling 1.68bn Euros ($2.44bn, £1.5bn).
The European Commission said Microsoft’s lawfully binding agreement ended the dispute and averted a likely fine for the company. The Commission’s anxiety was that the US computer giant might have broken competition rules by bundling its Internet Explorer web browser with its dominant Windows operating system.

Microsoft confesses code theft for Chinese blog Juku

Technology.am (Dec 16, 2009) — Microsoft has until further notice suspended its Chinese microblogging service MSN Juku after admitting that it “copied” code used to form the site. A vendor constricted to work for the software giant was caught lifting code from a competitor Canadian start-up, Plurk.
According to Plurk as much as 80% of the basecode was “stolen directly”. Microsoft apologized to Plurk, saying “we are apparently very disappointed however we assume responsibility for this situation”.

Microsoft rectifies office 2003 document lockout bug

Technology.am (Dec. 15, 2009) — Microsoft has fixed a difficulty in Office 2003 that prohibited the software from opening documents saved by means of its access control technology.
The company warned late Friday that Office 2003 would not be able to open documents that had been confined with its Rights Management Services (RMS) further than the day until Microsoft issued an update, even if users were sanctioned to open the document.

Microsoft, Google uncover Climate Change Web Apps

Technology.am (Dec. 15, 2009) — Microsoft and Google have built Web applications intended to underline environmental problems coinciding with the climate change negotiations in Copenhagen that run through Friday.

Yahoo, Microsoft confirm search contract

Technology.am (Dec. 08, 2009) — Yahoo and Microsoft have finalized their contract to install Microsoft as the private search provider for Yahoo’s network of sites, the companies announced Friday.
The deal, first reached in July, still wants to be accepted by the US government prior to it becoming official. However the companies said in October that they wanted additional time to complete the deal owing to the “multifaceted nature of this transaction”, and Friday’s announcement is probable to be the consequence of hundreds of hours of thorough evaluation from expensive lawyers.
