Technology.am (May 17, 2009) — A few weeks ago, Google launched a version of its online shopping service for phones running its Android OS, and now Google has enhanced this with barcode scanning.
The scanner enables users to quickly scan a barcode into their Android-powered mobile device and automatically have Google search for that particular item to find reviews, competitive prices and more.
The Barcode Scanner software can be used for Google Product Search on Android-based devices in order to do usual stuff like checking prices, reviews or all sorts of product details.
Android users interested in using the new product feature can visit the Google Product Search homepage on their mobile phone and click on the ‘Scan Barcode’ button, then select the “Shopping” button which you can find in the tab called “more”. Then, you’ll be able to see the “Scan Barcode” button which will give you the chance to install the application.
Once the application is installed, you should repeat the process: click on the Product Search then on the Scan Barcode. And “Select ‘Use by default for this action” and tap on the Barcode Scanner option. After the app opens, center the red line over the barcode and hold the phone steady. When the barcode is read successfully, you’ll see a Google Product Search results page back in the browser”.
The barcode scanning is focused for the moment on a small variety of products including books, electronics, movies and video games.
The integration of Barcode Scanner and Product Search for mobile is available in the US and UK, for Android-powered devices.
