Technology.am (Aug. 11, 2001) — Trufocals are the world’s first adjustable focus eyeglasses for people with presbyopia-age-related near-sightedness. TruFocals let you choose the perfect focus for every distance. The glasses retail for $895.
After two decades of work, physicist and inventor Stephen Kurtin unveils his latest brainchild: glasses with a focus adjuster on the bridge. TruFocals has a slider above the nose bridge that changes the focal point of the lenses in real time.
This allows you to choose the exact correction that works best for you at any distance and under any lighting conditions. The result: clear, undistorted vision over a wide field of view: no zones, no lines.
Each “lens” is actually a set of two lenses, one flexible and one firm. The flexible lens near the eye has a transparent distensible membrane attached to a clear rigid surface. The pocket between them holds a small quantity of crystal clear fluid. As you move the slider on the bridge, it pushes the fluid and alters the shape of the flexible lens. Changing the shape changes the correction.
TruFocals offer a wide range of refractive correction:
* Sphere: -8.00 to + 4.00 diopter (step 0.25D)
* Cylinder: 0.00 to – 3.00 diopter (step 0.25D)
* Prism: 0.0 to 3.0 prism (step 0.5∆)
TruFocals are about best quality of vision. For each Rx you submit, TruFocals are custom-manufactured with a DBL derived from your patient’s PD, thereby assuring optical centration.
Your patient’s TruFocals will also provide on-demand user-adjustable ADD: from zero up to his/her reading distance. In this way, the needs of every presbyope, from emerging to advanced (typically up to +2.75 D, max) are met precisely.
