Technology.am (Apr. 29, 2009) — A 500-GB DVD-size disc with storage capacity equal to 100 DVDs or 20 Blu-rays discs has been developed by GE researchers.
The GE researchers develop a 500-GB DVD-size disc with storage capacity equivalent to 20 Blu-ray discs and 100 DVDs.
The 500-GB disc is a major milestone in producing discs that can store up to 1 TB of data.
The GE’s discs use a recording technique called “micro-holographic storage,” an optical format similar to DVDs and Blu-ray discs.
The holographic storage has the unique quality for its ability to use the entire volume of the disc material and not just the surface, which is the case with the older technologies, GE said.
Moreover, GE researchers have been concentrated on lowering the bar for adoption by making the technology adaptable to existing optical storage formats and manufacturing techniques.
