From our launch in DEMO Falls 2008 to the recent Atlassian summit we have attended many conferences and along the way we have learned many lessons.We try to apply the lessons learned to our next conference, which could be one reason why our last one was the most successful conference. One important lesson we learned is that attracting crowds to your booth an important factor in any conferences.
A typical conference has many distractions for a attendee. The keynote presentation, panel discussions and networking events take much of the time. This leaves little time to check out the booths. People usually want to visit the important ones and booths with the crowds naturally look important. Below are few things you can do to attract crowds to your booth in case you get a booth in a conference.
In the beginning we didn’t use a banner at all in our booths. We have an awesome products, that enough right? Wrong. You may have the coolest product in the world, but unless people visit your booth they wont know about it. Your banner is the first thing people see and a good first impression always helps. The words and images in the banner also play a key role. You should make it exiting and intriguing to motivate the users to visit.
It doesn’t have to be expensive, although you will probably get a bigger crowd if you’re giving some expensive gifts. But having little gift boxes on top of your booth arouses the curiosity of the attendees increase your chances of getting a visit from them. Although we haven’t done any scientific experiment we feel that covering the price in bag or pouch increases the number of visitors because they want to learn what’s in the pouch. But if you’re giving out something truly amazing by all means leave it in the open.

Conferences are long and they usually have lots of educational sessions. People need refresh their minds after these long sessions and having a dart board at your booth just might interest those tired users. You can add your competitors CEO’s faces to make it entertaining for you as well (Just kidding, you do understand that is totally unprofessional right? ).
A Tip for the Organizers
Another cool thing we noticed in the Atlassian summit is how organizers have encouraged attendees to visit booths by organizing a competition. Every attendee got a card with a box for every booth. Every booth had a unique seal. If someone visits all the booths and get their seals on the card they were added to a draw to win the latest iPhone. Needless to say this encouraged many attendees to visit every booth.
