Technology.am (Sept. 16, 2009) — Opera has just released a beta version of its mobile web browser Opera Mini 5. Opera 5 Mini comes with several new features that make the mobile browsing experience more pleasant.
Top features of Opera Mini 5 beta are as follows.
Innovative and Easy-to-use: Opera Mini 5 boasts a powerful new user interface by merging the best from their desktop browser together with new innovations for mobile phones.
Tabbed browsing: Browse several Web sites at the same time. Jump easily from one page to another with the click of a tab. With tabbed browsing, you no longer need to interrupt one session to start another.
Password manager: Opera Mini is a virtual memory bank, securely saving all passwords for e-mail, social-networking sites, online banking and more.
Find things faster: The new Opera Mini lets you search for text within a Web page, so you can get to the information you need even more quickly than before.
Full Web in your palm: When visiting a Web page, Opera Mini displays the overview of the page and suggests where to begin your reading before you zoom in.
Touch & Keypad: The interface optimizes the display for both touchscreen and keypad phones. With a touchscreen, you can enjoy even easier navigation with our new zooming and kinetic scrolling.
Speed Dial: Get your favorite Web page with just one click. Speed Dial is a set of visual bookmarks you see when you open a new tab, like a dashboard for your on-line life.
Built for Speed : Opera Mini compresses pages by up to 90% before being sent to your phone, meaning faster page-load times than in other mobile Web browsers.
Power scrolling: Scroll at warp speed using your phone keypad or by dragging the page on a phone with a touchscreen.
Copy/paste/search – The copy/paste option is newly introduced in the Opera Mini 5 beta. Within the page, you can anything copy or paste.
Server-side rendering: Opera Mini 5 is a thin-client application: when you use it to request a web page, the request is sent off to a server-farm; where a proxy server renders and reformats the requested page, and then converts it to an efficient format by OBML. This is then sent to the Opera Mini client, which displays it on the phone screen.
The OBML can reduce the file size by up to 90%, it means, where bandwidth is at a premium, you can save a lot of time and money.
Opera Mini 5 standards support: Opera Mini 5 uses the Opera Presto 2.2 rendering engine, bringing its display capabilities in line with Opera Mobile 9.7 beta and Opera 10 for desktop.
CSS 3 Media Queries. These allow you to dynamically optimize CSS layouts and styling depending on device attributes such as screen width and height.
