Technologies Offered to us by the Military

We have all heard stories about the army right from our childhood. All those tales are mostly on how the army has protected us all the way from international dangers and how they have come to rescue when people are in big time trouble like calamities. And it is about the sacrifices made by them and the disciplined life that they lead.

There is a popular saying:

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men and women stand ready to do violence on their behalf.- George Orwell (An English author and Journalist).

Of course, military men are the real heroes because of whom all of us are able to live in peace. But what is lesser spoken or never known about them is the fact that they have also brought about a lot of revolutions to mankind through their technological inventions. A number of technologies we use today are owed to the military strategies or the military technology.

Here are 10 of the most common gadgets that can be dedicated to the efforts of the military.

GPS Navigation

Today the GPS (Global Positioning System) seems to occupy many of our gadgets and devices. It is a luxury factor that makes our traveling and exploring tasks easier. This is a space related satellite navigation system which shows information about locations anywhere on the Earth in all weather conditions. There are dedicated GPS devices with a variety of features as well as simple GPS-enabled gadgets like mobile phones, tablets etc. These days, GPS devices are used for multiple purposes and have a number of capabilities. They are used in vehicles as maps, robotic directions, finding the nearest, safest and easiest nearby spots such as restaurants, bars etc.

This extremely awesome technology was first used in 1970s when the very first GPS device was used by the Soviet Union and the US for airway and waterway accuracy.

World Wide Web

World Wide Web

The www or the World Wide Web needs no introduction. It is often difficult to recollect how many times the ‘www’ could have been used by an individual in a day. Most of the domain names use the ‘www’ for naming internet servers as it has been in practice for a very long time now. It is a collection of interlinked hypertext documents operated through internet and with help of a web browser a person can navigate or view the web pages.

Early in the 1960s, the technology was developed by United States as an internet function to protect the nation from a possible nuclear attack. This has led to the invention of the internet.

And guess what that has done to the world!!

Microwave Ovens

Microwave Ovens

Ask a foodie and he will tell you what a microwave oven has offered him. With a number of cooking assistance, it offers efficient cooking facilities. This kitchen appliance e can heat foods by dielectric heating method where a microwave radiation arouses polarized molecules inside the food, quickly and efficiently. People prefer it as a safe and offer many convenient features like reheating food just before taking them.

The invention of the microwave oven is attributed to military strategy used in the 1930s. It was discovered by the Royal Air Force and was used in radars for early warnings. Earlier this technology was named as ‘Radarange’ and initially marketed in 1947. Even these days, this technology is used in air traffic control system as well.

Digital Cameras

Digital Camera

There cannot be a single man on Earth who does not like to have a look at a photograph of the past? No matter whether it is the past minute’s adventure, yesterday’s happenings or the incidents of the past years. The camera is one such device that has always helped us to keep the memories of the past. Digital cameras are new generation cameras which can capture still photos and video images digitally through electronic image sensor by recording the images. It can record, play video and can store thousands of images in a small memory card with image editing facility.

It is mainly used for digital photography and they are again owed to the efforts of Soviet Union and the US, way back in the 1960s. The digital camera uses the same technology used in the spy satellite.

Low Light Photography

Low Light Photography

The cameras that evolved earlier were restricted to daytime usage. But they are no more an issue in the modern days. Low-light photography or night photography is used by professional photographers, military or any common man who wants to shoot during the night. The technology used in the device is setup in such a way that it is suitable for night vision or shooting during the night.

Again this technology is clearly attributed to the military. Before 1940s it was literally impossible to take photographs in low light. The military of US invented this technology to be able to view in a low-light atmosphere.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine

As we all know the nuclear medicine is used to diagnose a number of health conditions which is done by radiology methods. Radionuclide elements are mixed with other chemical elements or mixed with pharmaceutical compounds to form radiopharmaceuticals. When these radiopharmaceuticals are given to the patients, it directly reaches to cellular receptors and specific organs. It helps the nuclear medicine to figure out the level of disease process by physiology and cellular function. In some cases, this nuclear medicine is used to detect problems during earlier stages and it is suitable to call a nuclear medicine as Endo-radiology as it records emitting radiation from within the body. Specially, in the modern days they are being used more and more to operate complicated conditions and other health problems like the blood disorders, thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism to name a few.

Back in the 1940s the nuclear technology was used for the first time by the US. Ever since, the technology helped in both nuclear power and nuclear medicine.

Walkie Talkie

This device was formerly known as handheld transceiver, has come out a long way from big antique telephones to the small finger-sized mobile phones of today. It is used for two-way radio communication and contains a ‘Push to talk’ switch that starts radio transmission through the antenna attached to the top of the unit. It operates through a half duplex channel where only a single radio transmits at a time. However the walkie-talkies have never lost their fame and are extensively being used in different professions. They are also used as toys, by local hunters, in the military, people in the safety service and world over.

The device was first used in Canada in 1930 and was a prolific communication system for the military for a very long time.

Global Positioning in Satellite

GPS Satellite

Today the exploring of space and all its components is an important activity practiced by most of the countries in the world. A lot of satellites are being launched these days through which the GPS system, communications and whether reporting activities are carried on.

In 1940s, the Soviet Union and the Nazi Party of Germany were responsible for the invention of long range attacks made possible by ballistic missiles. This technology has helped us develop our advanced satellite activities.

Swedish Firesteel – the Campfire Concept

Swedish Firesteel- the campfire concept

Only an outdoor enthusiast will know how it feels to have fun in the event of a camp fire especially on a cold winter night. The Swedish Firesteel was invented in the year 2000 by the Defense Ministry of Sweden and it is manufactured by Light My Fire, a Swedish company. For those who are not aware of this cool technology, this gadget is capable of starting fire in the toughest of whether conditions and generates sparks of fire at a temperature of 3000°C.

Silly Putty

Silly Putty

And that is not all that the military has offered us over the years. The Silly Putty is one of the coolest discoveries ever made by the military though it does not come under the category of technology stuff. It is made up of silicon polymers which display unusual physical characteristics and this is an accidental military invention during research of potential rubber substitutes. It is marketed as a toy for children and an estimated 20,000 eggs of silly putty are being sold over the world.

Everybody knows the value of having a good military service. Their courage, creativity, hard work, dedication, disciplines and never-give-up attitude has done wonders not only to their respective nations but to the whole world. They have offered us much more than what we actually think of.

Once again, thanks to the military service and hats off to their commitments!!
