Toyota Develops Breath-Alcohol Ignition-Interlock System (Sept. 01, 2009) — Toyota is developing an anti-drunk driving system which when installed in the car would automatically lock the ignition if high levels of alcohol are detected in the driver.

vignette.phpThis equipment features a hand-held breathalyzer with digital camera that detects alcohol consumption and photographs the driver’s face for identification.

The system will either warn the driver, or lock the vehicle’s ignition based on the level of alcohol detected.

If the driver tests positive, the system either warns the driver, or locks the vehicle’s ignition based on the level of alcohol detected and it will also alert fleet administrators.

    While this is a great idea, I don’t see it happening on standard passenger vehicle any time in the near future. It should definitely be installed on all commercial vehicles without a doubt.
